1) YEAH
BOARD OF DIRECTORS DECISION REGARDING INTERNS AT YEAH ACADEMY
- YEAH encourages the use of
interns at YEAH Academy, but that it should be a win-win
situation for all: tutor, intern, family, student and
YEAH.
- Interns can be partially
defined as having on-the-job training with a qualified
tutor.
- The supervising tutor of an
intern should
- be on site 100% of the
time
- in the classroom with
the Intern(s) at least 50% of the time, but more than
50% of the time is ideal.
- Exceptions would be if
the tutor was ill or had other emergency reasons for
being away from the class, in which case the Intern
could serve as a knowledgeable substitute teacher for
the course tutor.
- YEAH contracts with the
tutor personally
- YEAH does NOT contract
with the tutor's company (although tuition payments
may be made to the tutor's company)
- Interns are not
subcontractors of the tutor in their role at The
Academy
- YEAH must approve of the
selection of all interns
- Guest lecturers fall under
totally different guideline than interns. These
selections fall under the trust level that the
administration has established with the individual tutor.
- YEAH has the Right of
Approval and the Right of Refusal with no explanation for
all individuals contracted to tutor at The Academy
(primary tutors and interns).
- The tutor must present the
potential intern, with his/her credentials, to the YEAH
board of directors.
- A policy statement and
contract for tutors and interns, and a definition of
"interns has been drafted for board approval.
2) DEFINITIONS:
- Intern
and TA (Teaching Assistant) and differences between them
- TA is a "go fer"
to assist the tutor within the class as needed: TA does
not take a role in classroom instruction unless
occasionally called upon by the tutor, or in the case of
an emergency where the TA may be needed to substitute
for the tutor if the tutor is ill or absent for some
reason.
- Intern is involved with an
advanced level of mentoring by the tutor with the
intended outcome of the further education and experience
of the intern. The level of involvement of the
intern is determined by the supervising tutor.
- Contracts
defined:
- YEAH's contract is with
the tutor, not the tutor's company and not with the
intern
- Tutor contracts with the
intern:
- Compensation or
consideration, if any, is arranged and agreed upon
between the tutor and the intern.
- Options may include,
but are not limited to:
- Bartering with
the tutor for another class taught by the
tutor
- Payment by the
tutor to the intern
- Other
compensation or consideration
3) YEAH's
requirements for approval of an intern by YEAH
- YEAH's Board of Directors
must approve of all interns utilized by YEAH Academy
tutors
- Sequence:
- Potential intern must be
hand picked and selected by the tutor
- Potential intern must
serve as a TA for the tutor first, duration TBD by
tutor.
- The individual will
develop into the role of an Intern second, after being
successful as a TA
- Intern must have
demonstrated skill level in the subject matter of the
class for which s/he will be an intern.
- Intern must have
demonstrated proven maturity level
- Intern must have a
reputation of high character and moral standing.
- Intern must have proven
character qualities inside and outside of the
classroom in areas such as
- High ethical
standards
- Trustworthy of tutor
confidentiality
- Can be trusted with
proprietary information regarding student and
family files, the tutor files and the YEAH Academy
proprietary "inside" information
- Intern must have
demonstrated leadership stature that
- Is "beyond a
peer" status with his/her peers
- Commands (vs. demands)
respect from students and other tutors and staff.
4) YEAH's
expectations of Tutor utilizing an Intern
- The tutor must be held
accountable to YEAH Board of Directors for
- the results in the
classroom, and that learning is taking place by the
intern
- insuring that the best
interests of the class/students is being maintained
and achieved
- the educational outcome
for the students in the class is the same whether the
tutor or the intern is leading the class
- insuring that the class
meets parent expectations
5) Expectations
of each party involved must be a win-win
- The Intern can expect to
- learn
- receive on-the-job
training
- The Tutor can expect to
- receive the joys of
mentoring
- reap the rewards of
making an impact on the next generation
- not anticipate less
work; to mentor an intern is actually more work than
doing it themselves.
- The Family and Student can
expect
- a higher ratio of tutor
to student attention in the classroom
- more individualized
attention for the student within the classroom
- the continuity of
teaching and scheduling should the tutor need to be
absent for any reason; the intern is an automatic sub
for the tutor, if needed
- The YEAH Academy can expect
- provision of continuity
if a substitute is needed if and when the tutor may be
absent
- to achieve YEAH's goal
of developing leadership in the next generation while
maintaining exceptional educational standards.
6) Tutor
responsibility to the Intern and to YEAH
- Tutor must
- supervise all classroom
activity
- oversee and approve all
curriculum development
- direct intern and help
the intern develop his/her teaching and leadership
style
- be on site 100% of the
time that the intern is in the classroom (with
exception of the times when intern is serving as a
substitute for the tutor for illness or other occasional
and necessary absence)
- be in the classroom at
least 50% of the time that the intern is in the
classroom
- Tutor responsibilities to
the intern
- Duties within the
classroom are to be clearly laid out to the intern before
and during the contractual period
- Duties within and
outside of the classroom are to be determined by the
supervising tutor, based on
- classroom needs
- tutorial needs,
desires, gifts and teaching style
